Matthew 9:1-13

Faith That Forgives and Calls

Matthew 9:1–13

Jesus had just crossed back into His own city when friends brought Him a paralyzed man on a mat. Everyone expected a healing—but instead, Jesus said: “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.”

Why start with forgiveness? Because Jesus knew the man’s greatest need wasn’t his body—it was his heart. He then healed him physically to prove His authority. Forgiveness always goes deeper than the surface. We may ask God to fix circumstances, but He first restores our soul.

Reflection: Where do you need Jesus’ forgiveness more than a quick fix?

Next, Jesus walked by a tax booth and called Matthew. Tax collectors were despised, seen as traitors and sinners. Yet Jesus said, “Follow Me,” and Matthew did. He didn’t clean himself up first—he just got up and followed. Later, Matthew invited other “outcasts” to dine with Jesus.

That’s the heart of the gospel: Jesus doesn’t wait for us to be perfect. He calls us as we are, and His presence transforms us.

Reflection: What does Matthew’s story say about how Jesus views you? Who in your life feels “too far gone” but may need His call?

The Pharisees were scandalized: “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But Jesus answered: “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick… I desire mercy, and not sacrifice. For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

What a powerful reminder! A hospital is for the sick, not the healthy. Likewise, the church is for the broken, not the perfect. Jesus is not interested in empty religion—He is after mercy, compassion, and lives changed by His love.

Reflection: Who can you show mercy to this week, the way Christ has shown it to you?

Takeaway

Matthew 9:1–13 shows us three life-changing truths:

  • Jesus forgives sins—the deepest healing we need.
  • Jesus calls the outcast—giving purpose to the least expected.
  • Jesus shows mercy—welcoming the broken into His kingdom.

The paralytic walked away restored. Matthew rose and followed. Sinners sat at Jesus’ table. And Pharisees were challenged to rethink everything.

The same Jesus is calling you today. Will you rise? Will you follow? Will you extend His mercy?
